Black grand piano in a Viennese apartment, prepared for transport

Piano and grand piano transport in Vienna

A piano is not a piece of furniture with strings attached. It weighs 150 to 500 kilograms, it has a lacquered surface that records every scratch, and inside sits a cast-iron frame under about twenty tonnes of tension. We move nothing but instruments like that — with our own piano skid, trained carriers and a fixed price you know in advance.

Why a removal company should not just take the piano along

The biggest challenges are not on the road. They are in the twelve metres between the apartment door and the vehicle — which is exactly where routine and improvisation part ways.

A removal crew moves thirty pieces of furniture in a day. We move one single instrument and plan access, number of carriers, skid, tipping angle and set-down points for it. This is not a side service next to the moving business; it is the only reason this division exists.

Five steps from the photo to the new spot

No site visit, no haggling on moving day. You send pictures, we calculate — and what we quote is what you pay.

01

Photos & key facts

One picture of the instrument, one of the stairwell, plus floor and address. From make and model we can usually tell weight and build without asking.

02

Fixed price within 24 hours

You get a price, not a range — including packing, transport, floors and insurance. Valid without small print.

03

Date & preparation

We sort out lift dimensions, stairs and access times at both addresses. If a crane is needed, we say so now and not on moving day.

04

Packing & carrying

On the day the instrument is wrapped on site, the floor is covered, the piano goes onto the skid and is brought down the stairs under control.

05

Setting up & handover

At the destination we place the instrument where you want it, take the packing material with us and walk around the piano together with you.

A recommendation for afterwards: let the instrument acclimatise for 24 hours in its new place and have it tuned only after two to four weeks — then the tuning will hold. On request we arrange the tuning appointment, together with an experienced piano tuner.

The chain of protection — step by step

Inside, a piano is a cast-iron frame under roughly twenty tonnes of string tension. Outside, it is a lacquered surface that records every fingernail. The two need very different kinds of protection. Here is how we work.

1

Padded blankets on every surface

Lid, side panels, back and underside are wrapped completely in padded furniture blankets and secured with stretch film — never with tape directly on the finish.

2

Corner protection on the edges

The four case edges get additional corner guards. They are the point where the pressure builds when the instrument is carried through door frames.

3

Piano skid with ratchet strap

For stairs the instrument goes onto the padded piano skid on its side and is strapped firmly to it. The skid takes the load and distributes it across the carriers.

4

A blanket over music desk and keys

The fallboard is closed and secured, the music desk covered separately. Otherwise it rattles against the case for the whole journey — which is exactly where the classic lacquer damage comes from.

5

Carrying-strap systems instead of brute force

Shoulder straps put the weight on the body, not in the hands. That is the difference between a controlled set-down on step seven and an instrument that slips.

6

Floor and door-frame protection

Parquet, tiles and stair nosings get covered, door frames get padded. The most common damage in a piano move is not to the piano — it is to the apartment.

Who will be standing in your living room

FlexiTrans is an owner-managed Viennese business: Goran Dzajic runs the company and still carries on the jobs himself. For piano work we deliberately send a small, fixed crew — the same people who have already carried hundreds of instruments down Viennese period staircases.

No agency workers, no rotating subcontractors. When you call, you speak to someone who will be lifting on the day as well.

Fixed prices instead of hourly rates

For a piano move an hourly rate is the worse deal for you: the longer it takes, the more you pay. So we price per instrument — and carry the risk ourselves if the staircase turns out tighter than expected. For several instruments on one date we quote a combined transport with a combination discount instead of two full single prices.

How stairs change the price

Stairs are the single biggest cost factor in piano moving — and the most common source of nasty surprises with other companies. So here is our scale, in the open.

Ground floor / step-freeno surchargeUp to two steps are not counted either
3 to 5 stepsno floor surchargeTypical for raised ground floors and basements
6+ steps, or per floorfull floor surchargeMini € 24 · upright € 26 · grand € 46
Lift available & usableno floor surchargeThe instrument has to fit in upright
Narrow period spiral staircasequoted individuallyWe then plan with three to four carriers
Crane neededfrom € 380When stairs and lift are not enough

Every surcharge is in your quote before you book. Nothing is added on moving day that was not discussed in advance.

Where we move pianos

„Our grand piano was on the fourth floor with no lift. Two companies turned us down, the third wanted to charge by the hour. FlexiTrans looked at the pictures, named a fixed price and stuck to it — crane included. The piano is in the living room without a single scratch."
