Why 200 kilos of piano are not 200 kilos of furniture
The mass of an upright sits high and at the back — in the cast-iron frame and the soundboard. That makes it tip differently from any wardrobe: it does not fall, it twists away from you. If you have not felt that before, you notice it when it is already too late.
Then there is the action. Around 12,000 individual parts of wood, felt and metal, regulated to tenths of a millimetre. A hard knock on the stairs does not knock a string out of tune — it knocks the regulation out. And you only notice that when you play.

The chain of protection — step by step
Inside, a piano is a cast-iron frame under roughly twenty tonnes of string tension. Outside, it is a lacquered surface that records every fingernail. The two need very different kinds of protection. Here is how we work.

Padded blankets on every surface
Lid, side panels, back and underside are wrapped completely in padded furniture blankets and secured with stretch film — never with tape directly on the finish.

Corner protection on the edges
The four case edges get additional corner guards. They are the point where the pressure builds when the instrument is carried through door frames.

Piano skid with ratchet strap
For stairs the instrument goes onto the padded piano skid on its side and is strapped firmly to it. The skid takes the load and distributes it across the carriers.

A blanket over music desk and keys
The fallboard is closed and secured, the music desk covered separately. Otherwise it rattles against the case for the whole journey — which is exactly where the classic lacquer damage comes from.

Carrying-strap systems instead of brute force
Shoulder straps put the weight on the body, not in the hands. That is the difference between a controlled set-down on step seven and an instrument that slips.

Floor and door-frame protection
Parquet, tiles and stair nosings get covered, door frames get padded. The most common damage in a piano move is not to the piano — it is to the apartment.

Narrow stairs, high floors, no lift
The Viennese Gründerzeit apartment is our standard case, not the exception: a spiral staircase with a narrow well, high steps, and a passenger lift that an upright piano will not fit into standing up.
We do not approach that with more force but with more planning: number of carriers, set-down points on every landing, the skid crossways instead of lengthways — and at a pace set by the instrument, not by the clock.

What customers ask us beforehand

Three as a rule — two carrying, one securing and guiding. An average upright weighs between 180 and 280 kg, a large historic instrument over 300 kg. Two people could manage that on the flat, but not under control on a Viennese period staircase. For tight spiral stairs or above the third floor without a lift we plan for four.
In practice we have never had to: the piano is wrapped as a whole and carried as a whole, and the action is never touched. Should a doorframe really be too narrow one day, we work out the solution from your photos in advance — before the day, not during it.
Slowly and with a plan. We measure from your photos first: tread depth, landing width, spindle radius and the clearance under the handrail. The instrument rolls to the staircase upright on the piano dolly, is then transferred to carrying straps and guided step by step — the lower carrier takes the load, the upper one holds the angle, the third protects handrail and corners. Wall edges and railings are padded with blankets beforehand. If the staircase will not take it, we say so in advance and propose the crane.
No. Up to five steps — the typical Viennese raised ground floor or basement case — we do not charge at all. From six steps, or per full storey, the floor surcharge applies: 24 € for a small piano, 26 € for a standard upright, 46 € for a grand. If there is a usable lift and the instrument fits in upright, the floor surcharge disappears entirely.
Please do not. That is not politeness: with a 250 kg instrument on a staircase, everything depends on each carrier knowing when the others shift grip. An extra helper without training raises the risk for everyone — and injuries to non-employees are not covered by our insurance. You help us most by clearing the route and holding the front door open.
For an upright from flat to flat, allow one and a half to three hours including the drive — wrapping takes 20 to 30 minutes, unwrapping and positioning about the same. Floors without a lift, tight stairs or difficult parking extend that. The price does not change, because we charge per instrument and not per hour — and for several instruments as a combined transport with a combination discount.
Yes. Digital and stage pianos weigh only 40 to 60 kg — they are carefully wrapped in blankets and film and carried by hand, which in practice is the gentlest solution for these instruments. Harpsichords, clavichords and historic square pianos we treat like grands: legs off, body on the padded skid. Send us photos and we will tell you which price class your instrument falls into.
